After a good night’s sleep dreaming of sunsets, we awoke and went outside to the front of the hotel to have a very much DIY breakfast, which was ‘okay’.
It involved a lot of walking to and from different places as the coffee was done on a hob in one place, with the mugs kept in another place and the milk up a flight of stairs to the fridge.
Once packed up and the little Fiat loaded up, we set back down the little track to get back onto the main road to begin our journey on to the next destination, Cefalu. With the roof down, sun shining and wind in our hair, we were making good progress down the motorway (we decided to take the motorway as it was less than 2 hours vs over 6 for the coastal route!). It was a challenging drive with the changing light of tunnel, light, tunnel, light, especially with the usual no holds barred driving standards over here.
As we were en route, we decided to visit Castelbuono, which is a small hillside town about 30 minutes away from Cefalu. The road up to Castelbuono was a combination of well surfaced sweeping and tight bends, that the locals obviously knew very well, as even though I was pressing on, I was being hassled by small Fiats at times, which I duly let past when possible. Driving in Sicily certainly requires you to have your wits about you. As if the narrow roads, with often intruding barriers, rocks, opening doors, pedestrians etc wasn’t enough, you never know when there’s going to be a huge coach coming around the corner on the wrong side of the road!
Once we arrived in the hill top town, we decided to just buy some supplies from the local supermarket for our evening meal, and head back down and on to Cefalu. Lo had spotted a good potential droning spot part way down the hill, which we took advantage of, before carrying on with our journey.
The road along the coast that brought us into Cefalu was simply stunning, with us pulling over several times to simply gawp at the views.
Today’s hotel couldn’t have been easier to find and we were soon into our room, which has the best views! After a brief period of setting our electrical items off to charge once again, we headed down to the pool for a super relaxing couple of hours by the water. Lo did her half a kilometre of lengths, whilst I had a quick dip in between snoozing after the day’s driving.
We then retired to our room, where I sit writing to you now, about to enjoy a hotel picnic on our stunning balcony overlooking mountains, sea and the restaurant below, which we may treat ourselves to tomorrow evening.
