So, it had to come sometime, but we both wish it didn’t have to. Today was the last day in our beautiful Igloos before an overnight stop in Catania and on to London for a night, before travelling back up to Sheffield. We started off the day with a trip out to a couple of supermarkets to get supplies for a barbecue that night and also pick up some gifts and other nice things to take back with us. We’ll miss driving on the roads around our villa and past the mystery red palm, which we couldn’t work out whether was real or not!
I managed to pick up some huge king prawns, of which photos will come later, and we managed to secure everything else that we wanted to buy, including Pope Candles, liqueurs, biscuits and interesting shaped pasta. One thing that has eluded us whilst we’ve been looking for them in the last couple of days are matches; we’ve tried big supermarkets, small shops, but no success. Finally, today a gentleman at the tills told us that they’re only generally sold in the Tobacco shops you find on the road side; interesting! However, after trying a couple of the way home, with still no success, we did at least have a lighter to help us light our anti-mosquito candle and firelighters, woo!
On the way back, we stopped off to check out another local beach to us by the roadside, so grabbed a few snaps. We hadn’t visited this specific beach, and it’s clientele seemed a bit older, which may be down to the fact that they now can’t make the climbs required to get onto most beaches around here.
Once back at the villa and shopping safely in the fridge, both Lois and I set about taking lots of photos of our super special Igloo villa to have all the memories we could want. Even after spending a week here, it’s still feels like a massive plot of land… which it is! We will certainly also miss the quietness, but we’re trying not to think about the daily grind just yet!
Our trusty little Fiat! We reckon we must have done over 1400km in her in the past 2 weeks!
One of our new pastimes since picking up a ball in Ortigia a few days ago!
After the quick photo session and with Lois catching some rays, I caught the chance to get some drone footage of the villa. The top down view really makes the Igloos stand out I think.,
After shooting the villa, I switched batteries and headed out down the coast to get some last shots of the beautiful coastline around here. I don’t think I could ever tire of seeing water so clear!
It was a particularly hot day and I have a rather rapid natural walking pace; both of these combined meant that I returned hot and ready for a cool down. This came in the form of a few large glasses of ice cold water and some lovely fresh watermelon that we’d picked up that morning, along with some other fruit.
After spending another relaxing afternoon both in the pool and reading besides it (along with making a start on packing and cleaning), we started preparations for our final barbecue by opening a bottle of bubbly. Once the barbecue had subsided from it’s raging inferno to leave behind a nice bed of hot coals, I thoroughly enjoyed my starter of king prawns; simply fantastic and it cost less than 3 euros for half a dozen of them! A real treat.
Once I’d had my fun consuming the prawns, Lois returned to the barbecue area (the smell and sight of seeing me ripping apart some crustaceans doesn’t particularly go hand in hand with a vegetarian wife; she’s very understanding, but she politely parked herself elsewhere for this experience).
After being joined by a friendly beetle basking by the anti-mosquito candle, we set about firstly cooking roast potatoes on the barbecue – highly recommended! – and then some lovely mixed veg, before I cooked some beef mince wrapped in pepper to accompany my main.
We wiled away the rest of the evening remembering the fun and amazing things we’d done so far, admired our rock (part of the villa and could be lit up at night), and enjoyed taking some nighttime photography and playing American Rummy before retiring to our bed for the final time here in lovely Plemmirio.
Tomorrow, we plan to make an early start to enjoy the sunrise and we will have to finish off packing our cases ready for our departure.
